This course teaches you a basic written analytical context for the music you perform and listen to. You learn the fundamental building blocks of Western Common Practice tonal music, including rhythmic, melodic, and harmonic elements, as well as a survey of two-voice counterpoint. Non-music majors/minors may take course with instructor approval only.
This course teaches you basic musicianship and increases your understanding of tonal harmony. You learn to recognize and reproduce basic musical intervals, melodies, rhythms. Knowledge is demonstrated through written and aural assignments and by singing in group and solo settings for the class and instructor. A basic understanding of music notation is highly encouraged. Non-music majors/minors may take this course with instructor approval only.
To provide music majors and minors with exposure to a wide range of musical styles, as mandated by the department's National Association of Schools of Music accreditation.

Emphases include expanded performance of piano literature and elementary sight reading. Successful completion with a grade A or B satisfies Part III of the Piano Proficiency Requirement. Students will be expected to perform compositions at the level of Clementi: Sonata, Op. 36 #1; Bach: Two Part Inventions, all scales, arpeggios, and cadences. This course is designed for vocal music students to learn IPA (international phonetic alphabet) and use it to improve English, Italian, French, and German pronunciations. Students must be enrolled concurrently in MU 109B, 209B, 309B, or 409B. (0-1.83)

Students may register for two credit hours only with approval of the music faculty. Two credit hours are required for a Performance Concentration. Exploration of 20th century theoretical and compositional techniques. Examples will include derivatives from the end of the 19th century, nationalist influences, and serial and aleatoric music, extended techniques, and electronic music.
